A range of chlorine-free water disinfectant products provide a non-toxic, environment-friendly method of water purification without the formation of adverse disinfection by-products (DBPs).

Water treatment products from Ezemvelo are designed to be easy-to-use solutions for the disinfection of drinking water and groundwater, particularly in developing countries and rural areas, aimed at preventing the spread of water-borne illnesses such as diarrhoea, cholera and typhoid.

The Rubi-Floc product is a bio-based cationic natural flocculent that acts as a coagulant, flocculent, and auxiliary flocculation agent.

A particular challenge in water purification is the treatment of water polluted with finely divided particles, such as untreated sewage, heavy metal ions, non-biodegradable pesticides and naturally occurring organic and mineral compounds. Rubi-Floc is designed to act in colloidal systems, neutralising charges and creating electric bonds between particles, making them unstable, producing flock and causing sedimentation.

The product can be used in a wide range of applications such as the treatment of wastewater in the metallurgy, pulp and paper, tanneries, food and chemical industries, as well as the secondary treatment of integrated systems in petrochemical wastewaters, and in conventional and compact drinking water treatment plants.

Rubi-Floc is ready-to-use, odourless and safe to store with no decomposition products. It is available in 25 kg bags.

Ezemvelo’s Rubicon water treatment product is free-flowing, granular and water-soluble, free from chlorine and halogen-based products. It is a proprietary blend of inorganic salts which act as oxidisers, disinfectants and coagulants, said to be more effective than chlorine in the destruction of spores, bacteria, viruses, fungi and other pathogens.

The use of Rubicon for water treatment eliminates the need for boiling water, which helps to reduce CO2 emissions and other greenhouse gases. It does not create trihalomethanes and DBPs and is not affected by photo-decomposition, temperature fluctuations or aeration.

The product can penetrate and break up biological deposits even at residual concentrations. It has a long residual life span and does not produce endocrine-disrupting chemicals.

The product has been approved by the South African Department of Health to be fit for human consumption and has also been approved by the Department of Agriculture, as well as Department of Health India and other countries.
